Supervision & Why It’s Important
Supervision is a critical part of becoming a confident, competent practitioner in the healing process. It ensures adherence to the highest ethical standards, promotes compassionate treatment methods, and offers essential feedback and guidance that bolster self-awareness and personal well-being. When therapists are taken care of, they’re better able to help others heal.
I also find the supervision process enriching for me as a supervisor. Supporting others through unique challenges motivates me to stay current with research, best practices, and evolving mental health approaches.
My Supervision Philosophy
In the wake of COVID, mental health services have been swamped by increased demand. I’ve heard many clients describe subpar therapeutic experiences—though I take these reports with a grain of salt, I see it as a call to action. Through my diverse experience working in crisis care, inpatient and outpatient settings, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), private practice, running retreats, and training licensed professionals in Parts and Memory Therapy, I’ve come to appreciate how critical quality supervision is for shaping practitioners who can meet these challenges effectively.
I’m currently pursuing a PhD in Clinical Supervision and Education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. My goal is to combine evidence-based practices, trauma-informed care, and decolonized perspectives to empower new and seasoned clinicians alike.
I summarize my supervision philosophy in three key areas:
Supportive
Supervision is a relationship. Authentic connection fosters trust, and trust enables me to fully support you—whether you’re celebrating victories or feeling uncertain.
Challenging
Growth often means stepping outside your comfort zone. Mistakes are opportunities for growth. Expect me to encourage critical thinking and a willingness to explore multiple perspectives on complex cases.
Finding a Good Fit
As your needs evolve, the supervision relationship must adapt. It’s natural and healthy for supervisees to outgrow their supervisor over time, moving on to learn from new perspectives.
